Appreciative Enquiry
Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a way of being and seeing. It is both a worldview and a process for facilitating positive change in human systems, e.g., organizations, groups, and communities. Its assumption is simple: Every human system has something that works right–things that give it life when it is vital, effective, and successful. A simple positive memory can instigate wonderfully creative change, bringing the best from the past to be part of the future.

Case StudyTim’s team had been drawn from six regions across England with experts in Environmental Pollution. They knew little of each other but had been tasked to write and deliver a programme on noise pollution which would be offered to High Schools and Colleges of Further Education targeting 13-17 year olds.Ten members attended a fun day where AI was used to allow the individuals to discover and learn about each other. Story telling about the best experiences that they had had at school began the day followed by discussions about engaging teenagers and making learning enjoyable. What would be the most dynamic way to engage these students? Where, how and in what way?
A creative process allowed the design to be developed blending their real memories to instigate innovative delivery.
The planned workshops were run in extraordinary environments; open parks, noisy coffee bars and in school rooms where the process was interrupted by loud music from adjoining classes, shouting in the corridor or tractors ploughing fields, just as students were invited to form discussion groups.
The way in which the workshops were delivered was indeed a real live intrusion by noise pollution into the students’ discussions. This grew from personal memories that the ten key experts shared about their moments of great learning in school.
